1887  This being is unknown among the central Eskimo, and numerous spirits, the tornait, take his place.
1897  These wizards are said to be taught from youth by one of the deputy chief friends, named "Tornat," and some of them are supposed to have great power with the spirits.
1912  (1913)  TORNIT. A fabulous race which the central Eskimo believe to be akin to themselves, but much taller and stronger, having very long arms and legs and being able to toss huge boulders as though they were pebbles. The Akudnirmiut call them Tuniqdjuait.
