one of a large number of persons loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution, many of whom came to the eastern provinces of Canada as settlers during the Revolution and for some years afterwards.
1887  This class of settlers had no objection whatever to be classed as U.E.L.'s notwithstanding that their sympathies were altogether with the "patriots."
1899  The frequency with which U.E.L. occurs after the names of the first Canadian members of their respective families is characteristic of the country.
1958  In 1897 the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Ontario was incorporated with the object of uniting the descendants of the UEL's and preserving the historical records of these settlers.
