- 1795  (1911)  When Governor Simcoe was driven . . . to Detroit he carried these "choke ropes" and had occasion to use them.
- 1955  Some experienced travellers on the river-roads even carried "choke-ropes" to rescue their horses should the sleigh fall through. These ropes were fastened around the horses' necks. If the ice gave way and the passengers succeeded in saving themselves, they would try to seize hold of these ropes and draw them tight. The tightened ropes would prevent the water from rushing into the horses' lungs.
