1791  The "bourgeois" was the chief trader, to whom the voyageurs were bound by engagements for service. The term was also often applied to the trader's agent or clerk, when the latter was in command of the expedition.
1806  (1960)  . . . as I had not his engagement I was obliged to take him on his word. . . .
1931  As soon as the agent had come to terms with his engagé, an engagement was signed.
1966  . . . voyageurs in general were mentioned as engages, or men who had engagements with the bourgeois.
