- 1853  The tree is now ready for the hewer's gang, which generally consists of the hewer and three, or at most four, axe-men, all of whom stand on the prostrate trunk of the tree, except the hewer.
- 1891  . . . the "hewer," . . . with his huge broad-ax, made square the "stick," as the great piece of timber is called.
- 1947  The hewer, standing on top of the log, wielded a broad axe with a large head and razor-keen edge, trimming first one side and then the other till each was almost as smooth as a planed board.
