n. a long, strong pole used by seamen for levering and thrusting against ice floes, etc.
- 1850  (1851)  The slackest and thinnest part of the floe, or fragment, was cut into with the axes and chisels until some fortunate blow or prise of the ice-pole rent and loosened it.
- 1906  This useful instrument [a sealing gaff] also serves as an ice pole, enabling the daring sealer . . . to leap from "pan to pan."
