1887  (1888)  The lash rope is from thirty to forty feet long, terminating at one end in a synch (girth) of ordinary size, the end of which remote from the lash rope is furnished with a large smooth wooden hook, in which a rope can run easily.
1912  By loading-time they've got such grass bellies on them that I has to be quite severe with the lash ropes. They hold their wind while I cinch them, and that's how their stomach's get kicked.
