n. the Canadian five-cent piece.
- Although called a nickel, after United States practice, for many years, the Canadian five-cent piece was until the 1920's a small silver coin; since this was withdrawn from use, a larger coin of nickel alloy has been in circulation, except during World War Ii when it was temporarily displaced by a bronze coin.
- 1883  If they were put up for ornament they do not fill the bill worth a nickle.
- 1966  Here in Lloydminster, we still dial for a nickel.
- 1967  A Queen's University student's contention that there are no such coins in Canadian law as pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters was rejected yesterday by an amused Ontario Supreme Court Judge.
