1942  SHAY. A geared locomotive, slow but powerful and adapted to heavy hauling. Shays of about 70 tons are commonly used in hauling logs from the landing to the mainline.
1953  However, railroad locies were in use much earlier in the Alberni Valley. A 42-ton Shay was hauling logs for Wiest Logging in 1914.
