sleeping-platform Northern Arctic
n. the bench or platform inside an igloo, used for sleeping and usually at the original snow level, the remaining space being an excavation where cooking and eating and other activities are carried on. [See picture at igloo.]

- 1940  There were two sleeping-platforms, one on either side of a pit in which were the stoves and cooking utensils.
- 1956  Not one speck of snow was allowed to fall on the sleeping platform. About half the floor space of a snow-house is taken up by the bench on which one sleeps. It is usually the original snow level.
