togony [< Algonk.; cf. Cree mÄstuchakunis] Obs.
n. a small wolf, Canis latrans, usually associated with the prairies but found across Canada, mainly in the region south of the range of the larger timber wolf.

- 1857  (1863)  I saw great numbers of the case wolf (mischechogonis or togonie) prowling about. This is the wolf proper to the partially wooded country, and is about twice the size of a fox, with a tail shaped like the brush of that animal.
- 1913  There were two kinds of wolves, the smaller being those known today by the familiar name of coyote, and then called "togony," an abbreviation of the longer Cree word.
