1954  Each man who had been on one of those long exciting trips to the interior, the pays d'en haut or up-country, had faced starvation.
1963  The upshot was a compromise in 1669 . . . when it was agreed to prohibit the taking of liquor into the woods but to permit its use in Montreal and other settlements, including trading posts in the up country . . . .
