rampike [cf. Brit. dial. rampick, ranpike; origin obscure, but probably from shape]

n. a tall, dead tree, especially one that is blackened and branchless from being caught in a forest fire.

- 1840 . . . those tall stumps of Canada [are] known by the elegant name of rampikes.
- 1853 . . . the recently burnt fallow, with its blackened stumps and rampikes did not contribute much to improve the landscape.
- 1883 In backwoods parlance these are called "rampikes," and make you think of the crowbars which the Titans may have used to pry up the rocks, with which they tried to pelt Jupiter out of Heaven.
