n. — Entertainment
the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, a non-profit organization advocating for the Canadian film and television industry.
Type: 1. Origin — This organization was created in 1979 as the Academy of Canadian Cinema. Forerunner groups created the Canadian Film Awards, first awarded in 1949, which were renamed the Genie Awards in 1980. In 1985, the academy was renamed the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television when it took on the Canadian television industry from ACTRA. The Gemini Awards (for English-language television) and les Prix Gémeaux replaced the ACTRA Awards in 1986 and 1987, respectively.
In 2012, the ACCT combined both the Canadian English-language awards from film (Genies) and television (Geminis) into one award and one ceremony, the Canadian Screen Awards, which were first presented in 2013. See also the ACCT and Canadian Encyclopedia references.
