n. — Entertainment
awards celebrating excellence in Canadian film, television and digital media productions.
Type: 1. Origin — The Canadian Screen Awards were first announced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television in 2012 (see the quotation) and are presented annually to celebrate talent in Canadian film, television and digital media (see ACCT reference). The Awards, also known as Screenies, are a recent amalgamation of the Genie and Gemini Awards, which for decades had honoured excellence in Canadian cinema and television, respectively (see Canadian Encyclopedia, s.v. "Canadian Screen Awards"). Because of the traditionally anglocentric focus of the Awards, separate ceremonies -- the Jutra Awards and the Prix Gémeaux -- were established to recognize achievements in French-language film and programming (see Canadian Encyclopedia, s.v. "Gala du cinéma québécois"). As with other famous awards like the Emmys or the Junos, the terms Canadian Screen Awards and Screenies may refer either to the ceremony or the awards themselves.
