Type: 1. Origin — Medals for academic achievement were presented by the Governor General as early as 1873. Today, there are about 60 awards and medals that bear the Governor General's name (see Governor General's web reference). The Governor General's Literary Award is the best known of these awards (see the quotations, which, with the exception of the 1989 quotation, all deal with this particular award).
