n. — Atlantic Canada, Fauna, Food
a scallop found on the Atlantic coast of Canada and roughly New England. Aequipecten irradians (see Image 1).
Type: 4. Culturally Significant — Bay scallop is a common term on the northern Atlantic coast of the US and in Canada. The term is first attested in the US (quotations from 1940 are found in The New York Times), which is a reflection of more substantial records in the US. However, bay scallops are more important to the fishing industry in Maritime Canada than they are along the Eastern US seaboard.
