Type: 5. Frequency — Though there is more than one drink called the brown cow (see fist note, below), the term is used most frequently used in Canada (see Chart 1), and here generally in reference to the version with liqueur. The term is very likely derived from the colour of the coffee liqueur (brown) and the dairy component of the drink.

- The American brown cow drink is a non-alcoholic ice cream float with root beer, or sometimes cola. It was first created in the 1870s in Philadelphia.
