supplementary income granted to employees working in isolated areas, usually in northern Canada.
Type: 5. Frequency — Isolation pay is supplementary income that is paid to attract employees to remote areas to offset the higher cost of living and to make such positions more attractive (see Service Canada reference). Isolation pay also appears in US newspapers, although with much lower frequencies. The term appears in Canadian governmental publications and in some legislation (see E-Laws Ontario reference). Chart 1 demonstrates the term's online prevalence in Canada.
