a level of amateur hockey, generally for players between the ages of 16-20 inclusive.
Type: 1. Origin — In Canada, major junior hockey is the higher of two levels of junior hockey and is the league for what is colloquially called farm teams, i.e. the level immediately below the National Hockey League. The Canadian Hockey League encompasses the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, which together have a total of about 54 teams throughout eight provinces and four US states (see also Canadian Encyclopedia s.v. "Canadian Junior Hockey").
