n. — Games, especially Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the North
a poker game requiring participants to race to various locations collecting one card at a time to get the best poker hand.
Type: 5. Frequency — It appears that the concept behind poker derby, a kind of scavenger hunt with a poker element to it, originated in the United States, as did the synonymous term "poker run". However, poker derby is used most frequently in Canada (see Chart 1). COD-2 lists the term as pertaining to Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, but newspaper evidence suggests that it is also used, albeit to a lesser degree, in Alberta (see, e.g. the 1994 quotation), BC, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. A concentration on the Prairies, especially Manitoba and Saskatchewan, is evident (see Chart 2).
See also COD-2, s.v. "poker run", which is marked "N. Amer", under which is "poker derby", which is marked "Cdn (Man., Sask., & NW Ont.)".
