n. — abbreviation, Sports
a representative league or team, which designates a level in children's sports where competition is emphasized over play.
Type: 5. Frequency — Team members in rep leagues need to pass tryouts to be admitted to this highly competitive level of children's sports, which is roughly equivalent to "travel leagues" in the US. A distinction is also made between rep teams, those A-teams of the best players who travel and represent the club or home town, versus the "house teams" who play locally in the "house league" and do not travel. The term rep league, as Chart 1 shows, is most frequent in Canada by a considerable margin (factor of 10).
See also COD-2, which labels the abbreviation "Cdn".
- In the US, the terms "travel team" and "travel league" are used for teams and leagues of the same nature.
