n. — Northwest Territories, often Aboriginal
an incorporated administrative unit, comparable to the department of finance of a municipality.
Type: 1. Origin — Settlement corporations are found almost exclusively in the Northwest Territories (see Chart 2) and are associated with Aboriginal communities and land claim agreements (see the second 2015 quotation). They can be compared, in function, to the finance department of municipal councils in towns and cities, yet have a different standing in law. Internet domain searches indicate that the term is most prevalent in Canada (see Chart 1).
See also ITP Nelson, s.v. "settlement corporation", which is marked "Northwest Territories".
