one of an aboriginal breed of dog, Canis familiaris borealis, probably originating in Siberia, trained by the Eskimo to draw sleds and carry packs.

- 1577  (1889)  Thier . . . Dogges [are] like unto wolves, but for ye most part black. . . .
- 1774  The great number of Esquimaux dogs, that must seek their own maintenance, prevent the success they [Eskimos] might have in catching fish, as these half-starved dogs, at low water, run into the nets, tear out and devour the fish, and morever [sic] tear the nets to pieces.
