n. — proprietary
a medication for nausea and motion sickness (active ingredient: dimenhydrinate).
Type: 1. Origin — A name for an anti-nausea drug that is popular in Canada and, above all, South Africa (see Chart 1), which appears to reflect the success of exporting the (Canadian-produced) drug to that country. See parkade and day parole for other terms that are common to Canada and South Africa.

- 1953  In the present series there was a total of 200
unselected cases. Of these, 100 received Gravol
solution preoperatively, and postoperatively
when indicated, either intravenously or intra-muscularly in dosage of 2.5 to 5.0 c.c. (i.e. 25
to 50 mgm.). The control group of 100 received
no anti-emetic medication.
- 1977  So far five senior citizens in Niagara-on-the-Lake have agreed to down a Gravol or two and suffer through the show. 'It's the least we can do for the CBC,' said one - 'after all, didn't they give us Razzle Dazzle and The Forest Rangers?' They certainly did ...
- 1981  The department wants to find a cure for nausea to keep soldiers healthy enough during a nuclear attack to mount a reprisal. A department bulletin says the vomiting ''would be incapacitating for any military tasks requiring precise actions and close attention.'' The military developed the widely used anti-nausea drug Gravol in the 1940s.
- 1986  Flight cancellations or other delays may leave you short of the drugs needed to control these threatening conditions. Old-fashioned horse sense and a medical kit will prevent many unexpected disasters. The kit should contain a decongestant spray if the pressures of flying have resulted in ear problems in the past. If you are prone to this, clear the nose and sinuses with the spray before taking off and prior to landing. Gravol tablets or suppositories are also handy to combat nausea, and consider carrying an antihistamine in case of a severe reaction to an insect bite, antacid tablets to ease the discomfort of overindulgence in food or drink, some Tylenol and Band-aids.
- 1997  There are many 'miracle cures' out there that sober us up, so that we don't regret waking up the next morning. I've heard of everything from chewing on a couple of Gravols to drinking a pot of coffee. Truth be known, once alcohol is in the body, it's there to stay.
- 2010  Pardon me while I take time out for a Gravol or two or three. Dr. Northrup, dearie, it is not hormones that make women more attuned to "inequity and injustice," it's the fact of having lived long enough to have learned a few things, reflected upon those experiences and acted on these new insights.
- 2015  A four-and-a-half hour bus ride that made half the passengers scramble for their Gravol and we finally arrived at the north end of the trail.
