a large freight canoe, measuring about 40 feet and capable of carrying 4 to 5 tons, used for the voyage from Montreal to the Grand Portage.

- 1793 (1933) Part of the Company's Furs are sent Round the Lakes in Shipping, but the major part goes down the Ottawa in montreal canoes.
- 1794 (1954) There are three of the large Montreal canoes lying here which are about 36 Ft long, 2½ deep, and 6 wide in Midships, carry 70 Bales, Bags, and Kegs each, and are navigated by 8 Men.
- 1961 Matt Bernard . . . supervises the launching of a large Hudson's Bay type canoe (canot du maître or Montreal canoe) which he completed Sept. 28, 1957.
