North West Company Northwest Company Hist. DCHP-1 (pre-1967)

• a fur-trading syndicate with its headquarters at Montreal, organized between 1775 and 1783 and absorbed by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821.

  • 1788  (1951)  A request from the Northwest Company for a grant of land one acre in width from Lake Superior to Long Lake.
  • 1807  Without resorting to the usual frauds of promises never intended to be fulfilled, the North West Company has explored an immense region, and penetrated even to the Pacific Ocean.
  • 1891  If potlatching and old-fashioned dancing did not at once fall into desuetude, it was because both were countenanced by the North-West Company and, later on, the Hudson Bay Company.
  • 1963  The pooling of interests in the north-west was accompanied by similar combinations at Montreal, and by
