  an annual award for excellence in French-language television, presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.

  Type: 1. Origin — The ACCT created the Prix Gémeaux in 1987 after assuming responsibility for television awards. As of 2013, there are over 61 categories of awards, as well as some special awards given for various reasons, such as diversity and multiculturalism (see Prix Gémeaux reference). Although the Gemini awards for English-language television were discontinued in 2012 and subsumed into the Canadian Screen Awards, the Prix Gémeaux are still awarded (see ACCT reference).
  Outside of Canada, the prestigious award is widely recognized, but it is named and discussed much more frequently in Canada (see Chart 1).
