Regie Régie, regie DCHP-2 (August 2016)

  a government body regulating certain domains in Quebec, e.g. alcohol, housing, language use, insurances and the like.

  Type: 1. Origin — This French term is used in Canadian English via imposed lexical transfer (Boberg 2012: 501). Since French is the only official language in Quebec, English speakers often adopt the French terms because of the lack of an official or clear and universal English version (see, e.g. the 2012 quotation). As Chart 1 shows, frequency-wise this term is, to no surpirse, a Quebecism as well.
  COD-2 (s.v. "regie") marks the term "Cdn ( Que. )".

  • 1895  One of the most amusing of the palace inconveniences was the department for repairing called "La Regie." The work people of "La Regie." were provided with skeleton keys of the apartments to be invaded without let or hindrance of the occupants.

  • 2001  Lost in all the cheering over Health Minister Remy Trudel's retreat on abolishing elections in many health establishments is the fact that he is sticking to his guns in one vital area. He wants Quebec to gain the power to name all members of the boards of directors of the most influential organizations of all - the regional health and social-services boards, better known as regies. Quebec gives money to the 17 regies across the province; after assessing local needs, each regie's board votes on how to spend it. 
  • 2008  But what any Quebecer can tell Premier Jean Charest, Mayor Gerald Tremblay, etc, is that there are too many politicians, too many civil servants, too many government agencies, regies or bureaus d'arrondissement, too many rules and regulations and too many laws that make us unproductive. There are also too few who pay taxes and too many who take the free ride. 
  • 2012  The names of government institutions, agencies and services, for instance, do not have official English equivalents, since the adoption of English translations would confer an official status on English and thereby contravene the spirit of the French Language Charter. […] This somewhat absurd restriction forces English-speaking radio and television announcers into awkward displays of code-switching, as when a public service announcement about drinking or gambling in moderation ends with a phrase like ‘this has been a message from the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux du gouvernement du Québec [‘this has been a message from the Bureau of Alcohol, Racing and Gambling of the Government of Quebec’]. 
  • 2013  About 50 cancer institutions have been sending information about new cases to the Quebec health insurance board, Regie de l'assurance maladie du Quebec, since January 2011. The registry is also collecting specific data on the stages and initial treatments for four major cancers: breast, lung, colon and prostate.
