a square doughnut with sugar glazing (see Image 1).
Type: 1. Origin — Originating in the Tim Hortons coffee and doughnut franchise in the 1960s (see the 2010 quotation), a dutchie, like other Tim Hortons creations such as double-double and Timbits (1), has some claim to a Canadian dimension.

- 1987  Grushenko picked up the story. "I, too, saw something move. Then something grabbed my foot. I think it was a chickweed; you know how vicious they can be. I managed to free myself. The horror, the horror." He was shaking so much he dropped his Dutchie.
- 1993  No, I'm a hockey mom, desperately seeking a doughnut shop. Under what other circumstance would you give your child a "dutchie" and call it breakfast?
- 1999  That's right, Tim Horton's is letting me down. Not only are they going to be closed for an astonishing 36 hours over Christmas Day, they're not going to be there on the big night. I have to change my plans for ringing in the millennium with a French Vanilla cappuccino and a snack pack of dutchie Timbits.
- 2004  For the uninitiated, a little history lesson: The first Tim Hortons opened in Hamilton, Ont., in 1964, a small business venture jointly owned by, and named after, Toronto Maple Leafs hockey legend Tim Horton. That outlet served only coffee and two kinds of doughnuts: the Dutchie and the apple fritter.
- 2009  The first Tim Hortons stores offered only two products - coffee and donuts. The selection of donuts to enjoy was highlighted by two original Tim Hortons creations, the Apple Fritter and the Dutchie. They became the most popular donut choices in the 60's, and remain two of the most popular today.
- 2014  If a Tim Hortons franchise does open in your home, you can drink as much coffee as you like, but not with a walnut crunch doughnut or a miniature dutchie. These are among 24 items recently dropped from the Tim's menu. Don't panic. You still can get two regular-size dutchies with your coffee instead of the usual half-dozen miniatures.
