in clearing land, a planned procedure for felling trees for burning (def. 1) in such a way that as many as possible fall near or across each other so that an efficient burn results.

- 1825 (1916) Jabez had shown us how to make plan-heaps, and we so fell the trees, which will save hard work when we come to burn.
